Leeds Mela - Bollywood in the Park

1996 saw the start of the Leeds Mela.

It was the first time something of this magnitude and content had been brought to Leeds, a city that welcomes so many different customs.

The crowds flocked to Rounday Park and embraced the festival that encouraged the education and celebration of a variety of cultures without the feeling of prejudice.

Spectators were able to partake in experiencing different foods, learning about cultures and experience the popularity surrounding bangra music.
It set the high standard that everyone partaking in the Mela has come to expect.
Bollywood in the Park

| 1997 had much to live up to following the success of 1996.

Many people who attended the previous year came flocking back along with many more spectators who had heard about the success of the event.

The funfair could be seen from miles around much like the shouts when the acts appeared on stage for the first time & the festival sported more stalls and attractions than 1996.

2006 was a bumper year. The sun shone and the crowds turned out in their thousands.

Channi & Alaap were a massive hit with the crowds as was Raja Kashif.

Every year the Mela supports a charity and in 2006 Leeds Mencap were our charity of the year.

Now in 2007 the Leeds Mela is no more or at least has dramatically changed in to Bollywood in the Park, giving a far more exclusive focus on the Bollywood scene, it is a bold move and everyone within Mela Festival will continue to support this Leeds initiative, we offer our best wishes for the future.
